In this time Nepalese people celebrate their major festivals of Dashain and Tihar (Dipawali). This is the peak season of tourist arrivals in Nepal.

Shoulder (From Mar to May)

This period is the second-best time to visit and trek Nepal. This time is spring. The temperature is mildly warm in low lands while moderate in higher altitudes with plenty of opportunities to have encountered with the mountain views. It is also the time for a rhododendron flower to blossom, the national flower of Nepal, which sweeps the ascending altitudes with its magnanimous color and beauty.

The tourist flow decreases a little, but not significantly in low season. During winter time (from Dec to Feb) the morning and night are cold and the days are warm when sunny. There might be occasional snowfall at higher elevations.

From June to mid-September is the monsoon time and it rains in most of the part except in the rain shadow zone of Mustang, Dolpo, and Humla. During monsoon clouds often obscure mountain views.

Food

Usual Nepali food is plain and simple, not very spicy, but full of flavors. The restaurants in popular travel destinations of Nepal offer varied of cuisines like Continental, American, Indian, Chinese, including traditional Nepali food.

Must Try Food

Dal Bhat Tarkari: This is the stable Nepalese food and favorite dish of many travelers.  It is served with thick lentil soup (dal), with rice (Bhat) and vegetable curry (Tarkari). Pickles (Achar) spice up this dish and sometimes it will be served with curd or yogurt, and meat (‘masu’), usually chicken or mutton.

The Newars, the indigenous group of the Kathmandu Valley, have their own much more exotic and varied cuisines. They use spices in a much more creative way, with a wide range of spicy dishes which are delicious.

Momo, Tibetan food which is less spicy, that you can find everywhere. These are small dumplings filled with meat or vegetable, usually steamed or fried.

For dessert, there are many sticky sweets usually made from milk and curd. The curd is widely available.

Vegetarians are well catered in Nepal. Many Hindu and Buddhist Nepalese are vegetarian.

Please also visit the page Cuisines of Nepal.

Drinks

Bottled water (Pani) can be found in most places. Request to avoid drinking the water unless it has been boiled or filtered, since tap water is not drinkable.

Chang is a local mild beer made from millet or rice. It is the home brew and made with local water.

Raksi is traditional distilled liquor usually made from millet, wheat or corn, and sometimes rice.

Nepali tea or masala tea is a special tea with spices like cinnamon added, that gives a brilliant flavor. Local normal tea is with milk and already added sugar.

Coke, Fanta, Pepsi, and other locally produced soft drinks are widely available. Slice is a delicious mango juice and Dew is a local soft drink which tastes a bit like Sprite.

Lassi is a curd based popular drink which may be either savory or sweet.

Electricity in Nepal is produced by hydroelectric dams. The output voltage from the wall outlet is 220V AC and frequency is between 50-60Hz. People visiting from countries using different voltage and frequency should make sure that their adapter/charger is capable of operating in this range. For example, the United States uses about 120V AC and some electronic devices might be designed to operate in that voltage only. Likewise, the standard Nepalese electrical outlet is the Type D (three round-pronged triangles) outlet common to India, but nearly all will accept Euro plugs, and some have been retrofitted to accept American and/or British plugs. Simple adapters can be purchased inexpensively, around NPR80, in Kathmandu to change the shape of the plug (but not the voltage of the electricity).

ATM machines can be found in Kathmandu and Pokhara, and other larger towns, but not in smaller places. Outside these places, in general, credit cards are not widely accepted and every time payment is processed using the paper slips, often with an additional charge of 3-4%. In Nepal the money withdraws through ATM Machines is in Nepalese currency (NPR) only.

Internet

All the major cities have internet access either in hotels or internet cafes. In smaller places/ villages, you are unlikely to find the internet, though at places like Manang, Namche Bazaar and at Tengboche, you can access the internet (satellite connection). Expect connection speeds to be slow.

Telephone

In Kathmandu and most of the tourist places, there are many ‘communication centers’ where you can call, send faxes and emails. A few places have internet phone services that are much cheaper.

It is easy to get a Nepali SIM card in Kathmandu or Pokhara (bring a photocopy of your passport and two passport photos).

Global roaming agreements exist with some international phone companies. Check with your provider before leaving home if you wish to access roaming.

Post

When posting mail to international addresses, it is best to leave your mail at the post office rather than in a post box. In Kathmandu, some bookshops sell stamps and will take your post to the post office for you. Most hotels can also help you post your mail.

Clothing depends on place and time. Medium-weight and easy to wash cotton can be a good choice year-round in Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan and most other towns. It is recommended that between October to February, woolen sweaters, jackets or similar other warm outfits are necessary. From March through May, light clothing such as short and long-sleeved shorts will do perfectly fine. For months from June to August, it is recommended that you bring an umbrella or raincoat and a pair of sandals with you as these months are the rainy months of Nepal.

If you intend to go for trekking, a pair of hiking boots will be great. Bring warm clothes with plenty of woolen socks too. Specialized trekking gear is easily available and can be rented in fairly inexpensive charge in Kathmandu and Pokhara.
