Manaslu Nar Phu Valley Trek
Trip Overview
Manaslu and Narphu Valley are the emerging Himalayan hiking destinations in Nepal. Manaslu and Narphu Valley both have still listed on the restricted zones in Nepal. But by special permits from the Nepal government, tourists are allowed to trek in Manaslu as well as Narphu Valley.
Indeed, Manaslu and Narphu Valley are the hidden treasures of Nepal. They are relatively less explored places by many trekkers than other established trekking routes in Nepal. Manaslu Narphu Valley Trekking connects these two different hidden Himalayan territories. This trekking also joins some parts of Annapurna Circuit Route.
The trekking starts with exploring of Manaslu. After the visit of Manaslu, you will enter Nar Phu Valley via a small portion of the Annapurna Circuit route. From Nar Phu, you again come to join with Annapurna Circuit to finish this trek.
Mt. Manaslu (8163 meters/26781 feet) is the eight tallest mountains in the world. Manaslu zone opened for the tourists in 1991 AD. The word Manaslu defines ‘The Mountain with Spirit’. Local people believe that the holy being who is strong and benevolent resides within this mountain.
Manaslu area is amazing in nature and fascinating in culture. It put forward incredible mountain scenery and a diverse range of eco-systems of the area from 620 meters to 5160 meters above the sea level. The hiking is trail goes along Budhi Gandaki. It passes a number of waterfalls and lakes and interesting Buddhist Monasteries at medieval looks villages named by Lho, Sama Goan, and Samdo.
The Larke La Pass (5160 meters) is the highest elevated point of the Manaslu trekking route. It grants eye-catching views of Mount Manaslu, Himal Chuli, Ganesh Himal, and other peaks of above 6000 meters height.
After the cross of Larke La Mountain pass, you hike down to Dharapani following Koto (Dharapani, Koto at the Annapurna Circuit route). From Koto you will enter to hidden Valley ‘Nar Phu’. The valley opened to foreigners with special permit only from 2003.
Nar and Phu are two ancient villages. As they are inside the valley they are less windy but the lands are dry and rugged. Phu is located at the upper end of the valley. The valley is surrounded by Pisang Peak to south, Kangla Pass to the west, Kangru Himal east, and Damodar Himal to the north. The populations in the villages are less.
The lifestyle of the villagers is very unique. It is influenced by Tibetan Buddhism. The Buddhist Monasteries, Mani Walls at the villages are also the attractions for the trekkers. From Phu Village people also go for a day hiking to Himlung Himal base camp for better acclimatization to cross Kang La Pass (5315meters).
After finishing the exploration of the Nar Phu valley, you will cross a bit challenging pass called by Kang La Pass (5315meters). This pass grants the amazing mountain views of Lamjung Himal (6983m), Annapurna II (7937m), Annapurna IV (7525m), Gangapurna (7455m), Annapurna I (8091m) and Tilicho Peak (7134m).
From Kang La pass you trek down to another old looking village called Ngawal. After crossing the pass you again join with the route of Annapurna Circuit. From this Village, there are various options to end the trek. You may either hike to Chame from where by jeep drive you go to Besi Sahar and from Besi Sahar back to Kathmandu by bus.
Or from Ngawal hike to Manang following Yak Khara, Thorong Phedi to cross Thorong La (5416 meters) – another high Himalayan pass, then Muktinath and Jomsom. From Jomsom either by drive or fly go to Pokhara and from Pokhara back to Kathmandu by bus.
