Trip Overview
Langtang Valley Trek is a pleasing short hiking tour that takes you to explore the alpine Langtang region situated northern side of Kathmandu. This beautiful valley surrounds by the majestic Himalayan peaks. The Langtang valley and its adjacent area are designated as Nepal’s first National park in the Himalayan territory. The government of Nepal declared the Lantang region as a protected area in 1971 AD. The final destination of Langtang Valley Trek is Kyanjin Gompa at an altitude of 3870 meters from sea level. Thus Langtang Valley Trek is also often called Kyanjin Gompa Trek.
Langtang trek allows for the exploration of mountain villages and local lifestyles. Next, it grants to visit Himalayan glaciers from the lower elevated place. Furthermore, it offers to discover striking views of the Himalayas. They are Mount Langtang Lirung (7246 meters), Dorje Lakpa (6966 meters), Gang Cheenpo (6388 meters) and Ganesh Himal (7429 meters).
It has an interesting story about the name of Langtang for this area. According to the legend, one day a lama (Buddhist Saint) lost his yak. When following that runaway yak he discovered this beautiful valley. Later this area was promulgated in the name of Langtang. In the Tibetan language, the word ‘lang’ stands for ‘yak’ and ‘tang’ means to follow. In the upper part of this valley, we find lots of yaks. They are grazing in an open meadow.
Langtang region is inhabited by Tamang people. Tamangs are one particular indigenous group living mostly in the middle part hills of Nepal. The interesting fact is people staying in Langtang say they are Tamang but their lifestyle, dress code, language, and religious rituals are much more similar to the Tibetan than to the same ethnic group living in other places.
The doorway of Langtang trekking is Syabru Besi. It is reachable after 6 hours of drive from Kathmandu. From Syaphrubeshi the trail swings north into the Langtang valley crossing the river several times along with oak and rhododendron forests. Upon reaching Langtang valley firstly, you visit Langtang village. Afterward, the trail moves towards Kyanjin Gompa crossing through the glacial moraine.
Kyanjin Gompa is the ultimate destination of this trekking. Later you hike up to Tsergo Ri (4984m), the highest elevation of this trip. It offers spectacular views of the Himalayan panorama with glaciers. After that, you retrace your footsteps to Syabrubesi. Subsequently, you drive back to Katmandu ending the trek in Syabrubesi.

At high elevations, the combination of reduced oxygen and lower atmospheric pressure can produce a variety of unpredictable effects on the body, known collectively as Acute mountain sickness (AMS) is also commonly known as Altitude Sickness. Everyone who treks over 3500 m experiences some mild symptoms of AMS like slowness, dizziness, headache, nausea, loss of appetite, shortness of breath, racing pulse, disturbed sleep and swelling of the hands and feet but serious cases are very rare. The golden rule of prevention from Altitude Sickness doesn’t walk too fast at altitude, drink plenty of liquids, eating well, getting plenty of sleep and avoiding alcohol. If in case you feel any mentioned symptoms the simple cure is to move down (descend) and you shouldn’t ascend further until you start feeling better. To treat AMS there is also available medication Acetazolamide (better known under the brand name Diamox). The dosage is 250 mg every twelve hours. Diamox improves respiration at altitude and can, therefore, accelerate acclimatization. Some doctors recommend a preventive dose (125 mg twice a day) for people trekking at high elevations. At the time of trekking our trekking team always guides you to prevent from Altitude Sickness and they always have Diamox along with first aid kit.
We believe casualty and a serious sickness will not happen on the trip. If it happens we will do everything to transfer you to the nearest hospital. Trip Reviews
Langtang is a fantastic trekking route in Nepal. We (four) did it in May 2017. We booked this trip with Excellent Himalaya Trek. It’s a Kathmandu based tour company of experienced local guys. Langtang is one of the earthquake affected places of Nepal on 25th April 2015. Besides enjoy on trekking, our other aim to see what’s going on there now. We discovered everything is getting good in a smooth way. Trail is ok now. Many lodges have reopened after reconstruction. We had enjoyed the trek with good sceneries of the mountains, life style of Langtang valley and the landscape of this region. During trekking we met different ethnic groups and observed their culture. The trial has some ups and down. Sometimes we got difficult to walk, at that time, our guide, Dawa, advised us to make our walk slow and steady. We followed him and completed this trek successfully. We have good memories from our Langtang trek. We are so much thankful to Excellent Himalaya Trek for all the perfect arrangements and services.

We selected Langtang Gosainkunda Trek for our 2017 holiday destination. We had also done it in November 2017. It was one of the fantastic trips which we have done in past. We know in Nepal there are lots of trekking trails but we decided to go Langtang as it was devastated by a huge earthquake of 2015. During the trek, we saw earthquake effects. We also talked with local people. We discovered now everything is going on in normal way there. Many lodges have been repaired and can have good rooms there. Langtang Gosainkunda is a perfect trekking route in terms of breathing Himalaya views, beautiful nature, and touchable hospitality of local people. We enjoyed this scenic trek with guide and porters of Excellent Himalaya Trek. Thank you so much, Suman, the proprietor of this company, Dawa (trek guide), Porter (Hari) for wonderful time and experience in Nepal.
