Trip Overview
Dhaulagiri Base Camp trek is one of the adventurous and equally exciting trekking routes in Nepal takes you to the base camp of world’s seventh tallest mountain Dhaulagiri (8167 meters/ 26795 feet).
Dhaulagiri is a big massif which spreads around 120 kilometers/ 70 miles starts from the Kaligandaki River in the east to the Bheri River in the west. It includes Dhaulagiri I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII and other smaller peaks. Out of them, Dhaulagiri I (8167m) is the highest one.
Mount Dhaulagiri was firstly ascended by the Swiss Expedition group in 1960 May 13th. About this mountain, it has interesting historical facts. People used to think that it was the world’s highest peak before Kanchenjunga and Everest. The word Dhaulagiri was taken from the Sanskrit language which explains the beautiful dazzling mountain of the earth.
The major highlights of Dhaulagiri trekking are it offers amazing panoramic views of the Dhaulagiri as well as Annapurna Himalayan range with diversified geographic topography from the green forests to treeless Alpine land. The Dhaulagiri trekking route is also the habitat of different indigenous groups of Nepal. Their lifestyle and culture provide extra joyfulness to all trekkers.
The standard trip duration Dhaulagiri Base Camp trek is 20 days including your arrival in Kathmandu and departure day from Kathmandu. Beni is the gateway of Dhaulagiri Base Camp trekking. It’s a small city 303 km west of Kathmandu.
From Beni, you trek up to villages of Babiyachaur and Dharapani. Then, the trail passes through more picturesque villages with paddy fields like Muri, Baghara, Dobang, Sallaghari. These villages especially are the home of Gurung, Chhetri, and Magar communities. Afterward, you will ascend to Italian Base Camp. This beautiful sight is located west of Dhaulagiri from where you can have breathtaking panorama gradually when you continue walking. After Italian Basecamp, your next camp will be at Glacier Camp subsequently at Dhaulagiri Base Camp.
The hardest day of this entire trekking is the crossing of French Col at (5,350m) to the Hidden Valley which elevated at 5,000m from the sea level. The Hidden Valley is also the ultimate destination of Dhaulagiri trekking. After one night camp there, you cross a final pass and trek down to Marpha. From this beautiful village, you trek to Jomsom. Jomsom is ending place of this trip. From Jomsom, you catch the flight to Pokhara and from Pokhara you back to Kathmandu by drive or flight.

The perfect time of Dhaulagiri Base Camp trek is from September to November and March to May. Within this time the mountain passes are less likely to be covered in snow.
