Tibet Travel Guide

Tibet is synonymously famous as Shangri La and Roof of the World. Tibet is an autonomous region of China. The Tibetan Plateau elevated with an average of 4500 meters is considered the world’s highest and largest plateau with an area of 2.5 million square kilometers. The territory of Tibet is bounded by the Himalayas to the south and the Kunlun Mountains to the north.

Geographically Tibet is on a humbling scale — dramatic snow-peaked mountains loom over vast plains, zigzagging highways weave their way through high passes draped with colorful prayer flags while glittering turquoise lakes stand in the shadow of centuries-old glaciers. But amidst the stunning natural landscapes, the people here are ever smiling who follow of Buddhism.

The way of traveling to Tibet is unique. Here, independent travel is not allowed. You need to book a tour with Tibet travel operator in order to enter Tibet and move around the region. Tours always include accommodation, transportation which accompanied by a tour guide. Moreover, all foreign travelers need to prearrange Tibet Tourism Bureau (TTB) permit besides Chinese Visa. To obtain permit all processing works will be done by your tour operator.

Tibet can be visited all year round. But the best time to visit is in spring and summer (from April to October) when Tibet’s weather is not too harsh and most areas of Tibet are accessible. Most Tibetan festivals take place in spring and summer too, including Saga Dawa Festival, Shoton festival, and Nagqu horse racing festival.

To getting Tibet there are two options. They are via cities of mainland China and via Kathmandu (Nepal). Kathmandu is the only international transit point to enter Tibet. From cities of China, you can enter Tibet by domestic flight or train. From Kathmandu, you can get into Tibet by flight as well as drive.

Tibet is a wonderful travel destination in the world. However, it has some factors that create some challenges to planning a Tibet Travel.

Rules and regulation: Rules and regulation especially about issuing Tibet Travel Permit keep changing from Tibetan Authority. Therefore, awareness of specific rules and regulation is utmost necessary,

Facilities: In major cities like Lhasa, Shigatse, Gyantse, there avail facilities of good hotels, road, and restaurants. But remote places lack good services.

High Altitude & Trekking: Tibet is the highest plateau in the world.  So, here some people may suffer from altitude sickness (Acute Mountain Sickness- AMS). Mild headaches, fever, loss of appetite or stomach disorders are general symptoms of AMS. Just make sure to get some Diamox (Acetazolamide) before your trip.
