Handicrafts
Nepalese handicraft is unique and one of its kind. The handicraft items like prayer wheels, traditional masks, puppets, intricately carved wooden sculptures and pottery items are some of the most famous handicrafts sold in Nepal.
Thangka Paintings
Thangka is a painting on cotton or silk applique, usually depicting a Buddhist deity, scene or mandala. Thangka is not a flat art like an oil painting or acrylic painting but consists of a picture panel which is painted or embroidered over which a textile is mounted and then cover with silk.
Singing Bowls
Singing Bowls are made of metal which make soothing sound when the rim is rubbed in a circular motion by a small wooden stick. Aside from the soothing sound, the vibration created by the bowl is said to be great for creating the ambience for meditation and have healing qualities.
Pashmina
Pashminas are shawls and scarfs made from a fine type of cashmere wool. These are warms and colorful come with embroidery. In Nepal there are available several types of pashmina and the price varies accordingly.
Rice Paper items
Rice paper is handmade paper made from rice husks. Such papers are more used as a base of a painting or a manuscript. Nowadays a wide variety of items are produced from the rice paper such as journals, diaries, calendars lamps shades and photo frames etc.
Khukuri
Khukuri is traditional Nepalese knife with an inwardly curved blade. It is a characteristic weapon of the Gurkhas army also. The Khukuri is a great memorable souvenir but it can be difficult to transport. So do know about the size limits of the Khukuri that can be easily transported.
Jewellery
Kathmandu is known for its great silver and gold based jewelry and arts. Many of the traditional Newari designed utensils are made in silver and make a very beautiful souvenir for you to take back home. You can also buy variety of local beads to prepare your own necklace.
Nepalese Tea
Nepal produces teas that are unique in its appearance, aroma and taste. Nepal’s teas are characterized by two types of tea, which are Orthodox tea and CTC (Crush, Tear, and Curl) tea. Most of the specialty teas, like green tea, oolong tea, white tea and hand rolled tea come under the category of orthodox tea.
Spices
Nepal is a great place to get some nice Himalayan spices. The Nepalese market is filled with multiple spices such as ginger, garlic, turmeric, coriander, cilantro – the leaf of the coriander plant, pepper, timmur – a unique Himalayan pepper, cumin, chilies, and mustard.
