How to go to Everest

How to go to Everest? Before giving the answer to this question, it will be best to know some important facts about Everest. Everest is the tallest peak in the earth. The height of Everest is 8,848m/29,029ft above sea level. It is located in the international border between Nepal and China’s Tibet Autonomous Region. This peak was discovered highest mountain in the world by George Everest in 1856. Before it named ‘Everest’ it was called Peak XV. Later in 1865the Royal Geographical Society gave its name by ‘Everest’ in the honor of Sir George Everest.

Everest in Nepal is called by Sagarmatha. It means forehead of the sky. Likewise in Tibet, China, people call it Qomolangma. Its meaning is the holy mother. Mount Everest is first successfully climbed by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa on 29 May 1953. Up to 2018, more than 8500 people ascended this peak.

People go to Everest, especially with two purposes. One is for climbing the Everest. Another large group of people to be reached at Everest Base Camp. To climb Everest is technically challenging and needs experience of other smaller peaks. It takes nearly two months. Getting to Mount Everest, not a real adventure. It’s relatively short and very wonderful trip with beautiful Himalaya scenery.

As mentioned above Mount Everest is in the borderline between Nepal and China it has two routes to travel Everest Base Camp and to climb the Everest. The Nepal route takes you to visit Southern face of Everest. Similarly, the Tibet (China) route is to visit Northern face of Everest.

Getting to Everest Base Camp from Nepal Side

To visit Mount Everest from Nepal side is more popular than Tibet. Behind this, there are couples of reasons. The first reason is while climbing Mount Everest Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa followed the Nepal Route. The same route most of the trekkers and climbers are using now to reach southern base camp and also to climb Mount Everest. The second reason is the route of Nepal lies into the territory of Sagarmatha National Park. So, it is an opportunity to see endangered flora and fauna with the diversified landscape. You walk along hillside forests, ravines, and the red earth of terraced farms surrounded by huge mountains. The third reason is you will be able to visit villages of Sherpa people and also meet, interact with them. Sherpas are the heroic climbers of Mount Everest and other high peaks. The fourth reason it is very easy to get Nepal visa and trekking permit. Nepal visa can be obtained in Kathmandu International Airport once you land there. For trekking permit it does not need long process, each trekking company of Nepal can arrange it after you reach there.

Everest Base Camp Trip from Nepal Side is scenic and colorful hiking trip. It’s a two-week exciting trip. Every place in the route has mountain lodges. They cater you food and room. Now up to Everest Base Camp, internet facilities are available.

Outline Itinerary of Everest Tour from Nepal Side

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu International airport.

Day 2: Fly from Kathmandu to Lukla. Trek to Phakding.

Day 3: Trek to Namche Bazaar.

Day 4: Acclimatization day in Namche.

Day 5: Trek to Tengboche.

Day 6: Trek to Dingboche.

Day 7: Acclimatization in Dingboche.

Day 8: Trek to Lobuche.

Day 9: Trek to Everest Base Camp.

Day 10: Hike up to Kalapatthar then trek down to Pheriche.

Day 11: Trek to Namche Bazaar.

Day 12: Trek to Lukla.

Day 13: Flight to Kathmandu.

Day 14: Sightseeing in Kathmandu.

Day 15: Departure from Nepal.

Getting to Everest Base Camp from Tibet Side

From Tibet Side, the road network is available up to Everest Base Camp. For the trip, you should land in Lhasa airport. Lhasa does not have international air connectivity except with Kathmandu. To go you should either fly firstly to Kathmandu, Nepal or any major city of China. Then from there, you can fly to Lhasa. The major issues of Everest Tour from Tibet are Tibet permit and Chinese Visa. Before visa, you should apply for Tibet permit to Tibet Tourism Bureau in Lhasa via travel agency at least one month prior to your travel date. After permit received you again need to apply for China visa. The processing of getting China visa is different in terms of the route you followed to enter Tibet (to land Lhasa). In Tibet side trip you travel up to base camp by drive. So, you should be well prepared to be safe from High altitude sickness.

Day 01: Arrival in Lhasa, Tibet.

Day 02: Sightseeing in Lhasa.

Day 03:  Sightseeing in Lhasa.

Day 04: Drive from Lhasa to Shigatse via Gyantse.

Day 05: Drive from Shigatse to Rongbuk Monastery.

Day 06: Excursion to Everest Base Camp. Then drive back to Shigatse.

Day 07: Drive from Shigatse to Lhasa.

Day 08: Departure from Tibet.
