  1. The height of Mount Everest is 29,035 feet or 8848 meters from the ocean level.
  2. Mount Everest was shaped by the movement of the Indian tectonic plate pushing up and against the Asian plate.
  3. Geologists say Mount Everest is over sixty million years old.
  4. Everest is termed Chomolungma by the Tibetan people. It means that mother divinity of the universe.
  5. Everest was named Sagarmatha by the Nepal Government. It means that divinity of the sky.
  6. Sir George Everest, Surveyor General of India from 1830 to 1843, discovered Everest in 1841. At that time this peak was called Peak 15.
  7. In 1865, it had been named Mount Everest, after Sir George Everest.
  8. Everest grows 4mm higher each year because of geological uplift.
  9. Sir Edmund Hilary, from New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, from Nepal, were the first to summit Mt. Everest, on May 19th They climbed from the south side on a British expedition led by Colonel John Hunt.
  10. The first woman to summit Everest was Junko Tabei of Japan in 1975.
  11. Over 2000 people have reached the summit of Mount Everest.
  12. Over 4,000 individuals have tried to climb Mount Everest.
