Everest Day 2018 is celebrated today in Nepal. Every year May 29th is marked to commemorate the first ascent of the world’s highest peak by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa in 1953.
Nepal Government has been celebrating May 29th as the ‘Sagarmatha Day’ with the official program for 11 years. Everest is named by Sagarmatha in Nepal.
Today addressing a function organized by the government, Bina Magar, a Nepali minister, who herself is Everest climber, said that Nepal places a high priority to the world’s highest peak but needs many more to be done for its preservation, especially for the high-altitude Sherpa guides.
She added “Sherpas are the backbones of Everest, who give lives to any expeditions. So, it’s our responsibility to retain them for sustainable tourism of Nepal”.
On the occasion, the Nepal government honored various Nepali climbers for their summits to Mount Everest with successful world records.
Kami Rita Sherpa was honored for being the only man in the world with twenty-two ascents to Mt. Everest. Likewise, Lakpa Sherpa was honored for being the female climber with maximum nine ascents.
In the program, the recorder Kami Rita Sherpa said, “Climbing Everest is my career so I will continue it for a few more years”. Similarly, Lakpa Sherpa said, “I will climb the mountain next year too making it for at least 10 ascents.”
Meanwhile, the Nepal government felicitated seven brothers, who set a Guinness World Records for the climbers from a single family conquered Mt. Everest.
In the ceremony, it was stated that Nepal government issued 346 mountaineers climbing permits aimed at Everest Expedition for the spring season of 2018. They were from Nepali and foreign teams.
The spring expedition began this year on May 13 and it ended last week. In this season, it recorded five deaths including three Sherpa guides and two foreign climbers.
