3 Days Hike From Kathmandu

The best route of 3 days hike from Kathmandu is Chisapani Nagarkot trekking route. It is also one of the very popular short trekking routes in Nepal. This hiking trip comprises of nature, culture and Himalayan views.

Sundarijal, 25 km driving distance from Kathmandu city, is the gateway of this scenic trek.  From Sundarijal you start your trekking and enter Shivapuri National Park. This park is the popular watershed region and the largest assets of drinking water supply in Kathmandu. Likewise, the park includes some religiously significant temples for the Buddhists and Hindus.

Similarly, the Park is sandwiched between the temperate and subtropical climate area which is also rich in wild lives and plants with oak, pine, and rhododendron as well as many varieties of orchids and mushrooms. Also, a great array of butterflies, bird species, rare animals whose life is under threat such as jungle cat, sloth bear, leopard, monkeys, etc. are found in the park.

During trekking, your first overnight will be at mountain lodge in Chisapani. From Chisapani you hike to Nagarkot, a popular hill station and much-preferred destination for many foreigners. Nagarkot lies in the hilltop at 2175 meter. It provides wonderful sunrise and views of snow-capped Himalayan ranges including Manaslu, Langtang, Dorje Lakpa, Choyu, Sisapangma, Gauri Shankar and Everest also.

After one night stay at the hotel in Nagarkot, you trek down through terraced land, village and visit Changunarayan Temple. This temple is the oldest temple of Nepal built in 464 AD and also listed as a World Heritage site by UNESCO. You end your trekking in this temple. Then you drive back to Kathmandu.

Itinerary

Day 01: Kathmandu – Sundarijal – Chisapani (Walking distance 5 hrs):

You drive to Sundarijal which is 13 km from Kathmandu. Sundarijal is situated at the elevation of 1350m from where you start trekking. Beyond Sundarijal, the trail climbs continuously through the forest to a medieval-looking reservoir, the dam and waterworks. The trail leaves the water supply system and climbs steeply to a road to 1550m. Then cross the road and continue to climb to the top of the Shivapuri ridge, the first village on the trail with the sprawling Tamang settlement. There are few small tea shops where you can sit for a cup of tea and enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of the Kathmandu Valley. The trail continues to climb steadily. After passing through an army camp, the trail enters the Shivapuri National Park. Most of the Shivapuri ridge is a dense forest of pine and oak. The climb continues down the ridge through a forest of oak and rhododendron to Chisapani at 2300m. Stay overnight at Chisapani in a teahouse.

Day 02: Chisapani – Nagarkot (walking distance 7 hrs):

After breakfast, you proceed to flat trails for about 3 hours. The trail descends almost two hours then you will reach a small village called Chowki Bhanjyang where you will have your lunch. Beyond Chowki Bhabjyang, the trail is flat for almost one and half hours then 30 minutes ascend to arrive at the beautiful Hill station called Nagarkot, situated at an altitude of 2175 m which provides the grandstand panoramic views of the Himalayas. You can see five of the fourteen tallest mountains in the world, including Mt. Everest (8848 m.). Other mountains are Lhotse (8516 m.), Cho Oyu (8201 m.), Makalu (8463 m.) and Manaslu (8163 m.) and many other lesser summits. The view of the peaks looks gorgeous during Sunrise and Sunset. Stay overnight at a Hotel in Nagarkot.

Day 03: Nagarkot – Changunarayan – Kathmandu (walking distance 4 hrs):

After breakfast, an easy walk down to Changunarayan Temple through the terraced farm, village, and forest. You will end of your this wonderful hiking at Changunarayan Temple also called Changu. This is a fifth century made Temple located over a hillock 15 km. east of Kathmandu and is full of artistic works on metal and wood. An inscription dating back to 464 AD found here is the first epigraphic evidence of Nepalese history. With a visit to Temple, you also explore old and nice Changu Village where you can experience the Newari local lifestyle. From Changunarayan, you drive back to Kathmandu by car. The driving takes nearly one hour to reach Kathmandu.
